You, indeed. We are constantly seeking new writers. We would love to hear about any innovative ideas you may have that may inspire our readers and advance our sector. However, there's no need to wait for a concept that will revolutionize online design. Just try to provide them a different viewpoint on a subject that's been bothering you at night.
But let's be honest: writing for ALA requires effort. We'll work with you to ensure that your piece is at the highest caliber possible. After being approved, you'll receive a lot of feedback from our staff and collaborate closely with an editor on edits.
It's also satisfying. Your work will be seen by thousands of your peers, as well as possible employers, clients, or publishers. In the process, you'll learn a lot about writing, presenting your ideas, and even the subject you initially believed you knew so much about.
What we’re looking for
You can send an outline along with a rough draft, partial text, or brief pitch—a paragraph or two that summarizes your argument and why it matters to our readers. The more thorough your submission is, the more insightful comments we can provide. Remember that we only publish original work; anything that has been published elsewhere (including on your blog) will not be accepted.
Please don’t send us press releases or sales pitches. They make us feel sad inside.
Check out our style guide and current articles for ideas on how to format and organize your work before submitting, and ensure that your submission:
possesses a thesis and presents a convincing argument, not merely a collection of advice.
has a voice. Be audacious, captivating, and genuine.
is intended for readers who work as designers, developers, information architects, content strategists, or in related fields.
is backed up by strong arguments rather than merely subjective judgments. Verify your facts, and include citations as necessary.
complies with our style standards.
Check out "Writing is Thinking" for some insightful advice on the writing process.
Additionally, you ought to read "So You Want to Write an Article?" to find out about typical mistakes we see in submissions and how to avoid them.
What we publish
What occurs after you click Send is as follows:
After gathering the team's input, the editor will reply to you with notes. (We don't usually accept articles on the first try, but we'll let you know if we have any interest.)
An editor will work directly with you on organization, reasoning, and style if your piece is accepted.
We'll arrange for your publishing as soon as the edits are finished. Until the piece is almost ready to go live, we are unable to provide you with a firm publishing date.
